Bischling – The Flying Mountain in the Werfenweng Flying Area

The Bischling may seem modest next to the imposing limestone walls of the Tennengebirge, but it’s worth exploring: The gondola leads up to a real gem with a magnificent high-Alpine panorama!

From the Gosaukamm and the Bischofsmütze in the east to the Großglockner in the south, your view sweeps all the way to the mighty Hochkönig massif and the Hagen Mountains in the west. The Bischling is one of the most popular flying mountains for paragliders and hang-gliders in the entire Salzburger Land. Its sheltered location often ensures optimal weather conditions, even when it’s too windy elsewhere.

From mid-May to the end of October and from December until the end of the season, the cable car takes both professionals and beginners directly to the launch site — no transfers needed. The Bischlinghöhe launch site is located at 1,840 m, just a few meters from the top station and right next to the Gasthaus Bischlinghöhe. Not only is the site easy to reach, it also offers favorable wind conditions almost all the time. A gently sloping meadow serves as the launch area, providing paraglider and hang glider pilots with plenty of space and excellent conditions

Launch Sites

Launch Sites

Bischlinghöhe Launch Site: Located right next to the mountain station and the Bischlinghöhe Inn at 1,815 m.

  • Easy access
  • Favourable winds
  • Ideal for both beginners and advanced pilots

Launch area: almost flat meadow facing southwest–west–northwest; also well-suited for hang-gliders due to sufficient length and steeper slope at the back.

North Launch Site: Another optimal grassy start, about 90 m north of the IKARUS mountain station. Used in northeast, east, and southeast winds. Large enough for 4–5 paragliders to take off at the same time.

Landing Site

Landing Site

The official landing site is located directly on the road to the valley station, on the left-hand side. From here it’s less than 400 m to the gondola. Paragliders can easily walk back to the valley station with their gear.

The landing field measures over two hectares and slopes to the west (the usual wind direction). If thermal conditions make the landing meadow insufficient, it is also possible to land in the next meadow toward Werfenweng.
